By the late s, it had become a symbol of urban decay and blight, compared by journalists to bombed-out Dresden and war-torn Beirut. Several decades and a dozen casinos later, Atlantic City is again one of America's most popular tourist spots, with thirty-five million visitors a year.
Yet most stay for a mere six hours, and the highway has replaced the Boardwalk as the city's most important thoroughfare. Today the city doesn't have a single movie theater and its one supermarket is a virtual fortress protected by metal detectors and security guards. In this wide-ranging book, Bryant Simon does far more than tell a nostalgic tale of Atlantic City's rise, near death, and reincarnation. He turns the depiction of middle-class vacationers into a revealing discussion of the boundaries of public space in urban America.

Does anyone know if there are places to play pool and gamble against someone? Also like to know if there is a place to play pool just for fun. I'm staying at the Mandalay Bay hotel. There are pool tables maybe only one on the 3rd floor at the Cosmo outside the restaurants.
Can't help you on the betting part. I know I've seen tournaments on ESPN but maybe that is just something they bring in and out whenever a tournament is going on.. When I was in a pool league there were yearly tournaments at the Riviera in early May My first trip to Vegas was due to the fact that we won it to be in this tournament as a mater of fact. I can't comment on the gambling part but as long as you kept it quiet and no trouble started as a result of the gambling, they probably wouldn't care too much, but I can't say for sure.

If you are looking to bet on other players, I don't have any idea if this is done. The one time I was in Backstage Bar, there was no one playing pool.
So I don't know how active this place is as a pool hall. But that was around 2: I know that there is wagering between players, but I don't know if there is any wagering among spectators. This place claims to be the largest pool hall in Vegas.
